Luka Modric has not yet made a final decision on his future at Milan, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that the Croatian legend is keeping his options open ahead of a scheduled meeting with new coach Ruben Amorim in the coming weeks, a conversation that could prove decisive in convincing him to extend his stay at San Siro.

Modric is currently focused entirely on Croatia’s World Cup campaign following a difficult opening defeat against England, and has made clear he will not address his club future until after the tournament concludes.

The 40-year-old, who turns 41 in September, made 37 Serie A appearances last season, contributing two goals and three assists, and holds a mutual option in his current contract to extend for a further year at €3.5 million net per season.

Love of Milan and Amorim’s tactical vision could convince Modric to stay despite Champions League absence

Two factors could tip the balance in Milan’s favour. Modric and his family are settled and happy in Milan, a personal dimension that should not be underestimated for a player approaching the final chapter of his career.

And Amorim’s vision for a more carefully managed, selective deployment of Modric, acknowledging that weekly double fixtures in Serie A and Europa League are beyond realistic expectation, could represent exactly the right conversation to persuade him.

The alternatives remain on the table.

A return to Dinamo Zagreb, his first club, holds emotional appeal. A non-playing role at Real Madrid is also a possibility should he decide the World Cup marks his retirement from football. But according to Gazzetta, via CalcioMercato, the last word has not yet been said on Modric at Milan.
