Luka Modric admits the failure to qualify for the Champions League helped make him realise he couldn’t end his Milan adventure yet. ‘The desire to bounce back is immense.’

The midfielder, who turns 41 in September, had some big decisions to make when his contract expired on June 30.

He had to not only decide whether to continue with the Rossoneri, but also on when to hang up his boots.

Speaking to the club’s social media channels, the Croatia international reveals that failure to qualify for the Champions League is what helped spur him on to not let it end on that note.

Modric believes in Milan project

“I’m thrilled to continue to be part of AC Milan, where you’ve made me feel welcomed and loved since the very first day,” Modric told the official club Instagram account.

“After a season below our expectations, the desire to bounce back is immense. A new season and a new challenge await us; a project I believe in and one that truly motivates me.

“I’m ready to give everything once again for this shirt, and I’m so proud to keep wearing these colours. I can’t wait to return to San Siro and hear your roar.

“See you soon. Forza Milan sempre!”

It is going to be a very different team this season, with coach Ruben Amorim replacing Max Allegri on the bench.

Amorim confirmed he had spoken directly with the player to convince him to remain, and it seems to have had the necessary effect on the Ballon d’Or winner.

His new contract runs to June 2027, a few months short of his 42nd birthday.
