Lorient defeated Monaco 3-1 this Saturday, September 27, at the Stade du Moustoir in Ligue 1’s sixth round, with a goal from Mohamed Bamba and a brace from Pablo Pagis. Monaco, reduced to ten men in the first half, failed to turn things around despite Ansu Fati’s efforts.
After several winless matches, the Merlus showed no hesitation in taking advantage of a Monaco side decimated by injuries. The opener came shortly after Thilo Kehrer was sent off (38'). Ivorian striker Mohamed Bamba broke the deadlock two minutes later (40'), marking his first Ligue 1 goal of the season.
Back from the break, Pablo Pagis—substituted in at the 72nd minute—doubled the lead with a solo run (76') and then made it three with a powerful finish under the bar (83').
Ansu Fati pulled one back from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late to change the outcome. With just four days before hosting Manchester City in the Champions League, this defeat comes at the worst possible time for Monaco.
