Mohamed Salah’s Benicàssim recovery and World Cup form

Mohamed Salah is driving Egypt’s 2026 World Cup campaign, their place in the round of 32 secured after two matches. A draw with Belgium and victory over New Zealand have them top before facing Iran, and Salah’s goal and assist against the Oceania side took him to 66 in 116 caps and delivered Egypt’s first ever World Cup win. Superdeporte highlights his enduring link to Benicàssim, which traces back to a previous injury.

In 2018 he left the Champions League final against Real Madrid with a shoulder injury after a tangle with Sergio Ramos, fearing the World Cup might be beyond him. He made it, scoring in both defeats to hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia.

His rehabilitation took him to Benicàssim in Castellón, where trusted physio Rubén Pons oversaw an intense programme. Observing Ramadan, Salah trained hard by day and refuelled at night, sampling local paellas. The shoulder healed and he returned to lead his country in 2018, as he is again now.

Salah arrived in Europe with Basel in 2012, then joined Chelsea months before Valencia’s famous comeback against the Swiss. A short stint at Fiorentina preceded a move to Roma after José Mourinho overlooked him at Chelsea. Liverpool then paid 42 million for the forward, where he became one of the game’s elite goalscorers.

Now 34, he is without a club and will reveal his next destination in the coming weeks. Suitors are plentiful.
