Morgan Rogers is due to have a Chelsea medical on Monday before completing a £117m British record move from Aston Villa. ExpressAndStar.com reports the clubs reached agreement over the weekend.
Back in the UK on Sunday with England after the World Cup, the midfielder is now set to finalise the switch. Villa wanted to keep him, but Chelsea’s fully guaranteed offer was accepted.
Arsenal had long been seen as the 23-year-old’s likeliest destination, yet Chelsea moved in to close a deal approved by co-owner Nassef Sawiris.
Middlesbrough will take 20 percent of the profit, expected at around £20m, after selling Rogers to Villa for an initial £8m in January 2024.
The sale eases immediate pressure from UEFA financial restrictions. Switzerland international Johan Manzambi has already arrived as his replacement for a club-record £52m, while Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is on the brink of a £38m move.
Villa are also working to sign AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan and have spoken to Bayern Munich about a loan for Portugal international Joao Palhinha.
Rogers would become the second player to leave Villa for a British record fee after Jack Grealish, with £117m surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson this month.
