Moroccan prosecutors pursue strict legal action against AFCON final disruptors
Moroccan courts have charged 18 Senegal supporter after crowd disorder during the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat.
Moroccan prosecutors have decided to pursue legal action against 18 Senegalese fans following incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final between Senegal & Morocco according to the defense team speaking to AFP on Thursday.
Defense lawyer Naima El gallaf said the defendants are being tried in custody by decision of the public prosecutor.
They appeared before the court on Thursday for first hearing which was quickly postponed at the request of the lawyers and the civil party to allow time to prepare the defense.
The next court session is scheduled for 29 January in Rabat.
Reports confirmed that the accused were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of involvement in disorder inside Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium during the AFCON final which Senegal won 1-0.
Reports indicated that one Algerian supporter was also detained in the same case. His lawyer Jaouad El Benaissi told AFP that his client is French citizen of Algerian origin and is also being held in custody.
The lawyer claimed his client has no link to violence and described him as sports management expert.
Before the end of normal time around 1000 Senegal fans attempted to enter the pitch area for nearly 15 minute. Security forces and organizers struggled to regain control of the situation.
According to the same reports, some supporters threw objects toward the field including at least one stadium seat forcing authorities to step in to secure the area and allow the match to continue safely.
The AFCON 2025 final was already tense due to key refereeing decisions late in the match. The crowd incidents added to the pressure on security services during one of the biggest nights of African football.
