Mourinho monitoring Benfica youngster Tiago Freitas, pre-season place virtually assured | OneFootball

José Mourinho is tracking Tiago Freitas as the Benfica midfielder pushes for a role in pre-season with the first team.

According to Glorioso 1904, the 19-year-old, who has impressed with the B team, remains under close observation from the coaching staff and his inclusion in pre-season is virtually guaranteed, the plan being to assess him at closer quarters.

Freitas debuted for the first team against Napoli, then a ligament injury stalled his momentum. He has since recovered and returned to regular training involvement.

He has featured frequently in first-team sessions. His physical profile, intensity and competitive edge match what Mourinho wants, and the staff intend to follow his progress through to the season’s end, with the coach already casting an eye towards 2026/2027.

He continues to split time between Benfica B and senior training. Freitas is currently with Portugal Under-20, having scored in a win over Switzerland, and will return to the club after the internationals to continue his push.

This season he has played 31 official matches for Benfica, 18 in Liga Portugal Meu Super, six in the UEFA Youth League, six in the Liga Revelação and one in the Champions League. Across 1,491 minutes he has produced five goals and four assists. He is valued at €550,000.
