The upcoming clash between Real Madrid and Benfica has captured plenty of attention, not just because of the teams involved, but also because of the managers on the touchline.

Jose Mourinho will face Alvaro Arbeloa, a former player he once coached during his time at Real Madrid, adding an emotional and tactical subplot to the Champions League encounter.

For this crucial tie, Mourinho may finally be able to use an option that was unavailable in the previous round.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Rafa Silva, who recently returned to Benfica, could play a decisive role in the matchup.

The 32-year-old Portuguese winger made a return to Benfica last month and since then, he has worked his way into Mourinho’s plans and now appears to be pushing for a starting place.

A crucial player to have

The outlet mentions that his arrival has affected the role of Georgiy Sudakov

The Ukrainian had been operating as the attacking midfielder, but Rafa Silva’s return has changed the dynamic.

While Sudakov impressed in the earlier match against Real Madrid, his starting spot is no longer guaranteed. He has not started the last two games, both of which ended in victories for Benfica.

“Rafa brings more depth than Sudakov. Sudakov drops back more and receives the ball in midfield areas.

“Rafa brings more depth and pushes forward more. In those kinds of situations, he gets there,” Mourinho said about the different characteristics offered by the two.

Despite the competition for places, Mourinho did not rule out using both players together.

“Playing with both of them together is an option for us,” he continued, leaving the door open for both to play together on the field.

Although Rafa Silva has not yet contributed with goals or assists since coming back, his experience remains valuable.

The Portuguese has played 48 Champions League matches for Benfica, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists.

If selected, he could make his return to Europe’s biggest stage after a long absence.
