Jose Mourinho head coach of Benfica was admitted to hospital shortly before his side’s Primeira Liga match against Santa Clara in round 22.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Mourinho suffered from ear infection and was taken to medical unit in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores.
The report said Mourinho woke up on Friday with ear pain that caused enough discomfort to require medical attention. He received treatment at the hospital and was discharged in less than one hour.
Afterwards the Benfica coach returned to the team hotel a few hours before kick-off. Despite the health issue, Benfica went on to win the match against Santa Clara.
Benfica are now preparing for a major European challenge. The Portuguese side will host Real Madrid on Tuesday 17 February in the first leg of Champions League play-off for a place in the round of 16.
Benfica secured their spot in this knockout tie after dramatic 4-2 victory over Real Madrid in the final round of the league phase, a result that confirmed their progression.
