José Mourinho is closing in on a switch from Benfica to Real Madrid and is preparing to take several backroom staff with him.

According to Record, he has decided to accept a return to Madrid, though that has not yet been formally relayed to president Rui Costa or the board. If his departure is initiated by Mourinho, Benfica would receive around seven million euros.

João Tralhão and Pedro Machado, two key assistants, are being lined up to join him at the Bernabéu, as is Nuno Santos, the goalkeeping coach. Analyst Roberto Merella is also likely to be involved, while Ricardo Rocha is expected to remain at Benfica.

He appears to have delayed that step due to external factors and is waiting on developments from Madrid before taking a definitive stance.

Real Madrid’s presidential elections have been brought forward, with candidate lists due by Saturday, 23 May. If Florentino Pérez runs unopposed he would be re-elected automatically, which could quickly unlock Mourinho’s formal appointment.
