Mundial 2026: Marcos Senesi replaces Balerdi in Argentina squad | OneFootball

Marcos Senesi has been called into Argentina’s Mundial 2026 squad to replace Leonardo Balerdi, who has been ruled out through injury.

Balerdi reported severe pain during a morning training session at the weekend, and tests showed a tear in the soleus of his right leg. The federation announced that he would not be included in the World Cup squad.

With an estimated 21-day recovery, the Boca Juniors youth product was set to miss the entire group stage. FIFA regulations permit injury replacements up to 24 hours before a team’s first match, enabling the change.

After analysis in recent days, Lionel Scaloni turned to his reserve list and selected former San Lorenzo centre-back Senesi to reinforce the middle of the back line.

Argentina are due to begin their campaign on Tuesday 16 June. Senesi has joined the camp to provide cover as the squad fine-tune preparations after this unexpected setback.
