This piece is really for those Newcastle United fans that aren’t lucky enough to get to St James’ Park and witness it first hand, I’m one of those fans.

I’ve followed them through thick and thin, I’ve become close friends with thin, haven’t we all.

So how do you become a Newcastle United fan in the early days, what’s the formula?

Well in my case, it was through reading the reports in the Sunday Post. I’m sure some of you will know what I’m talking about – Celtic, Rangers, Newcastle, The Broons, and Oor Wullie. What’s not to like ?

Two things I wanted to be, a Newcastle United fan and John Tudor. So I opted for the first.

What is it about this club that breaks your heart and can mend it just as quick? You tell me.

As a Newcastle United fan it’s very much love of the club and not the glory, you just feel part of something that puts two fingers up to what has become the ‘Big Six’, or as I prefer to call them, the Judas Super League clubs (not their fans).

About five or six years ago, maybe longer, I was watching a Monday night game in a pub with two pals, one Leeds, the other Spurs. It was Villa away and Grealish was still playing for Villa. I think we lost two nil. I started to think what is the point? We were awful . My two mates probably thought the same. I would even say it was embarrassing. The club was just existing, in my opinion, and the thing I prayed for more than anything else was a takeover. Even in the worst of times there was a feeling of just three decent signings and the team would transform into something far far better .

The fourteen years of Mike Ashley didn’t help of course. Treading water and suffered relegations, a club in a comatose state.

Winning odd big games like beating Man City when Rafa was boss, thank you Matt Richie. Hammering Spurs 5-1 in the final game of the season when already down.

Ayoze Perez late goals away to Spurs. We have a lot to thank Tottenham for. It all keeps you watching.

Who needs cups to follow Newcastle. I never thought it would happen anyway.

Fast forward to October 2021. I’d followed every scrap of information, on the Newcastle United takeover, for maybe two years, and there wasn’t one day I hadn’t checked onine three or four times.

I had concluded it was either going to fail, or take a lot longer. Then, that morning, it slipped across the rolling banner on the BBC news… Newcastle United have been taken over.

I genuinely couldn’t take it in.

I thought for a second that must be wrong, as it came like a bolt out of the blue. It was only when people congregated outside the ground it sunk in. Hashtag cans, hashtag cans.

Would we stave off relegation?

My Newcastle United season ticket holding friend had the view it was better to get relegated and start afresh. I couldn’t have agreed less.

One game sticks out, out of all matches, including Barcelona and the Carabao Cup final.

That was Everton at home.

It was 8 February 2022, deep in relegation trouble still, only one win at St James’ Park all season, only two Premier League victories in 21 PL games home and away.

We went one goal down, after the eternal wait for that Everton free-kick to be taken.

I thought, lose this and we are done.

Within a minute United had equalised and each goal I jumped about like I was watching it in the Strawberry, eventually beating Everton 3-1 on the night.

We had done it, in my mind, that night, we were on a different road and in a completely new direction.

So much I have left out but I will finish where I started…

So, here we are, Newcastle United with aspirations of Champions League football next season. Won the cup and sit third.
