The academy graduate has started every Premier League game as the Blues sit fifth, just a point behind Arsenal in third place.

Colwill on how his role has changed under Maresca

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Colwill spent a lot of time playing out of position at left back, much to the frustration of Chelsea fans.

However, this season he’s found himself playing in his preferred centre back position alongside Wesley Fofana, a pairing Noni Madueke described as perfect.

Colwill has been speaking in the build-up to Sunday’s game against Manchester United and revealed how his role has changed under the Italian.

“My role has changed a lot,” Colwill told Chelsea’s website.

“I’m playing back in my natural position and the way Enzo has us set up allows me to play my best football, show off my ability and to play more passes into midfield to start attacks.”

Colwill’s passing has stood out this season and the 21-year-old has shown off his impressive passing range on a number of occasions already.

Despite the Blues looking shaky at the back Colwill has arguably been Chelsea’s best defender, and sporting director Laurence Stewart believes he can become a regular for England.

The Cobham graduate didn’t play on Wednesday as Chelsea got knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle, but will be restored to the starting line-up for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford.

Colwill and Fofana will need to be at their best if the Blues are going to record a first win at Old Trafford since Juan Mata scored the winner back in 2013.
