Nail-biting final week to decide Liga MX Liguilla

This week brings the final two rounds of Liga MX Clausura fixtures, where the remaining playoff spots will be decided, and some teams will be left to agonisingly miss out on the Liguilla.

Ahead of Matchday 16, four teams are still able to finish top of the table, while teams as low as 13th still have a chance, albeit minimal, of reaching the postseason.

As we gear up for an exhilarating final week of regular-season action, let’s take a look at some of the games that may decide the outcome.

Chivas lead the league, but will need to see off the challenge of playoff hopefuls Necaxa and Tijuana if they are to remain there. Gabriel Milito’s men have managed to be in pole position for 12 of the 15 gameweeks, but find themselves only three points ahead of the chasing pack.

Pachuca find themselves in hot pursuit of the league leaders, surprising many, but the unprecedented is within reach. If Los Tuzos can successfully get past Tijuana and fellow top-of-the-table challengers Pumas, they will be in a good place going into the next round.

Cruz Azul and Pumas are the other teams that still have an outside chance of ending the week at the top, but they will need Chivas to drop points in both of their final games of the season.

La Máquina had been in a good position for a seat at the top before their recent form, which has led to an eight-game winless run. Their final week starts with a visit to Querétaro before hosting Necaxa on the final day.

Pumas have that major clash with Pachuca to end the season, in a game which could preview what we can expect for the Liguilla after welcoming FC Juárez to the capital on Tuesday night.

The real excitement this week is with the Liguilla positions, with a host of teams hopeful in the final week.

Club América, Atlas and León all find themselves clinching onto a spot in the postseason, but only by the skin of their teeth.

All three sides sit on 22 points, just one clear of 9th-placed Tigres. Los Felinos kick off their week with a must-win clash away in Guadalajara against Atlas. If they manage to get a result there, they’ll have a strong chance of climbing back into the playoff spots when they face Mazatlán at the weekend.

Tijuana are next in the pecking order, three points adrift of a postseason place, but their chances of reaching the next round are made even harder knowing that they will face two of the league’s best performers in Pachuca and Chivas in the final week.

FC Juárez, Necaxa and Querétaro are also hoping for a slice of good fortune, with all three needing consecutive wins in the final week to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
