Napoli are ready to close a deal to sign Kevin De Bruyne as a free agent with a contract agreed.
De Bruyne is available on a free transfer after Manchester City decided against offering the midfielder an extension.
The 34-year-old is currently weighing up his future, which includes an ‘important contract proposal’ from Napoli. The Italian league leaders are keen to bring in De Bruyne to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League next season.
De Bruyne has agreed terms on a contract worth around €10m (£8.4m) per season, though has other opportunities. Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire submitted a proposal to De Bruyne’s camp in April and that offer remains on the table.
De Bruyne has said he will consider all options as he looks to make the right decision for his family after 10 years in the Premier League.
Manchester City paid tribute to De Bruyne during their 3-1 win against Bournemouth on Tuesday night, the midfielder’s final fixture at the Etihad. He departs as arguably the most influential footballer in the club’s history, having played more than 400 games and won 19 major trophies. City have confirmed the commission of a statue to commemorate the two-time PFA Player of the Year.
Addressing the crowd after the win over Bournemouth, De Bruyne reflected on his trophy-laden time in Manchester.
“I wanted to play with creativity, I wanted to play with passion. I wanted to enjoy football and I hope everyone enjoyed it.
“Everybody has pushed me so hard inside and outside the club to be the best version of myself and these guys in front of me have made me better than I was before.
“It’s an honour to play with these guys. I’ve made so many friends for life.”
