Lorenzo Pellegrini eventually decided to stay at Roma in January after Napoli started courting him, but it’s not certain that will be the case long-term. He and the Giallorossi will soon have to sit down to discuss a renewal since his contract expires in 2026, Corriere dello Sport informs.
The team won’t push out the captain, but he’s not untouchable either. He personally made the call to nix the Azzurri move. Instead, an agreement between sides was possible.
His deal will be a big factor in a few months. Roma wouldn’t mind lowering their payroll, and Pellegrini is one of the highest-paid players in their squad. He had a good stretch in late December, but he hasn’t been fielded in three of the last six matches despite the recent goal versus Udinese.
Napoli plan to make another attempt, as they’ll need to be a lot deeper next season. His price tag will be lower given the time left on his contract.
The parties probably have a good enough rapport to not make it a problem to take things to the final year, which would instead be in more standard situations. The debate about his valuation will be fascinating, as he’s more valuable to his current side than any possible destination. Given the baggage and his salary, it makes sense to keep him only if he’s a full-time starter and he’s faring well, or he becomes a burden. The writing seems on the wall, but he has been reluctant to leave even when the noise was louder in the past.
