According to Sunderland Echo, former Sunderland academy forward Nathan Greenwood has signed for Northern League Division One side Easington Colliery.
The 25-year-old moved from Seaham Red Star to the Academy of Light in summer 2019, sharing dressing rooms with Dan Neil, Anthony Patterson and Bali Mumba over the next 10 months. He returned to Red Star in July 2020 when his Sunderland deal ended.
He has since featured for Whickham, Consett, West Auckland Town and Shildon. Last season he joined Chester-le-Street Town in Division Two, and now steps up to Division One with Easington.
Colliers manager Olly Hotchkiss said he was delighted to secure Greenwood, having long admired him at Shildon. He added that the forward has trained sharply from day one and looks ready to hit the ground running.
He described Greenwood as an exceptional talent who will excite supporters, and highlighted the player’s leadership by setting the pace in pre-season running. Hotchkiss also said Easington beat strong competition for his signature, which he believes reflects faith in the club’s project.
Easington have also added Joe Walton as a player-coach, the former Morpeth Town and Hebburn Town winger. Walton, who led Sunderland West End last season, will join Hotchkiss’s staff while remaining part of the playing squad. Hotchkiss said his experience and leadership will be vital for a young group and benefit the team on and off the pitch.
