Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson was widely judged England's standout as they lost 1-0 to Japan in a friendly last night, according to Nottingham Post.

Thomas Tuchel now has decisions to make before the World Cup later this summer after a flat team display. Cole Palmer was described as short of form and confidence.

Anderson clipped the crossbar before the break and impressed physically, though The Guardian noted he was often isolated against Daichi Kamada and Kaishu Sano.

The BBC considered him a certain starter for the World Cup, saying he brought assurance and drive in midfield.

The Sun highlighted his near equaliser, judging his long-range curler to have kissed the bar, and praised his tackles and interceptions.

The Daily Mail called him England's pick and said his line-breaking passes went largely unused by team-mates, while The Telegraph viewed him as the first-half bright spot.

If he shines at the World Cup later this year, he will no doubt attract big bids for his services this summer.
