Manuel Neuer has decided he will retire at Bayern Munich, with the timing still open, Kicker reports. The goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season.
He has chosen Bayern as his final club, but whether he retires this summer or later has not been settled. Bayern are open to extending the 39-year-old’s contract by one year. His choice is expected to hinge on his physical condition, with a decision likely around his 40th birthday on 27 March.
If he signs a new deal, he would agree to give Jonas Urbig more minutes, allowing the 22-year-old to grow into the number one role.
Alexander Nübel, on loan at Stuttgart, and Daniel Peretz, on loan at Southampton, are understood not to be part of Bayern’s long-term plans, with the club reportedly looking to sell both this summer.
Neuer has missed the last couple of games with a muscle injury and is pushing to be fit for Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund.
