The ink on new FC Augsburg defender Arthur Chaves transfer paperwork literally barely had time to dry before the 24-year-old had to suit up as part of his new Bundesliga club’s starting XI. FCA head coach Manuel Baum tapped Chaves for an immediate start against Bayern Munich. As it turned out, Chaves made an immediate impact; off a set-piece play he barely had time to practice on the training ground no less.

Chaves’ 75th-minute 1-1 equalizer gave the Fuggerstädter hope against the mighty German giants. A fine combo involving Dimitrios Giannoulis and Han-Noah Massengo would then enable the heavy underdogs to take the lead against Bayern at the Allianz moments later. The 1-2 scoreline held. Augsburg shockingly  sent Bayern to their first Bundesliga defeat of the season.

Finn Dahmen praises Arthur Chaves

The Augsburg keeper had nothing but kind things to say about the new man working in front of him. Such praise was understandable enough, given that the Brazilian connected with 80 percent of his 33 passes and won 75 percent of his eight major ground duels. The dead ball goal involved its fair share of luck, but both Dahmen and Chaves were happy to discuss it afterwards in any event.

He integrated really well straight away and it’s crazy how he played today!” Dahmen said in the mixed zone afterwards. “When we were practicing set pieces in the penultimate training session, he scored exactly the same goal. I had to look twice to see who it was. That’s mega, of course.

We said before the game that we might need a corner or a counterattack because it’s so difficult against Bayern,” Chaves himself said during his time before the microphones. “And that worked. It’s like a dream. I’m very happy. I’m at a loss for words, I just jumped up and had a bit of luck.
