The 2026 World Cup is once again bringing new talent to the forefront. One of the tournament’s biggest breakout stars is Lucas Herrington. The 18-year-old center back played his way into the spotlight with strong performances for Australia—and is said to have caught the attention of FC Bayern as a result.
In the Socceroos’ final group stage match against Paraguay, Herrington was surprisingly given a spot in the starting lineup. At just 18 years old, the defender became the youngest World Cup starter in Australian history.
The youngster, who is under contract with the Colorado Rapids in the MLS, impressed across the board in the 0–0 draw against Paraguay and was also named to the starting lineup for the Round of 32 match against Egypt. Once again, Herrington delivered a composed performance, proving himself ready for bigger challenges.
As reported by TEAMtalk, FC Bayern is among the clubs closely tracking the Australian international. According to the report, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and FC Barcelona also have the 18-year-old on their radar.
Whether the Munich club will make a concrete move anytime soon remains to be seen, however. Herrington still has a contract with the Colorado Rapids through the end of 2029. His strong performances at the World Cup are also likely to have significantly increased his market value.

In the short term, however, the record champions do not have an urgent need to make changes in central defense. With Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano, Vincent Kompany has a well-established starting duo.
Behind them, however, the personnel situation could still change. According to consistent media reports, Min-jae Kim and Hiroki Ito are still considered potential transfer targets. Should one or even both defenders leave the club, Bayern would need to bolster their squad.
Whether Herrington will actually become a concrete option remains to be seen. One thing is clear, though: With his performances at the World Cup, the Australian has firmly put himself on the radar of numerous top European clubs.
