Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that Standard Liege midfielder Aiden O’Neil is travelling to the USA to sign a contract with New York City FC. The 26-year-old Australian midfielder is set to bring the side around €2m, with a potential €500k in bonuses. With Standard still searching for a new owner, any money they can receive for players is welcome.
O’Neil began his career with Burnley, but only made five appearances for the side. After spells on loan at Oldham and Fleetwood he moved to Australia to join Central Coast Mariners in 2018 on loan. He spent one season there before moving on to Brisbane Roar, again on loan from Burnley. For the 2020/2021 season he left Burnley permanently and joined Melbourne City and spent three seasons with the side. O’Neil played 64 times for the club, scoring four goals.
In the summer of 2023 Standard Liege signed the midfielder on a free, bringing him back to Europe. He has gone on to play 54 games for the side, scoring twice and being named the club captain for this season.
