New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani cited an iconic Mario Balotelli quote during a speech ahead of the 2026 World Cup, calling the Italian ‘one of the greatest strikers in recent memory.’

New York Mayor Mamdani somehow caught the attention of Italian fans during one of his latest speeches.

Mamdani quotes Balotelli before 2026 World Cup in New York

Mamdani delivered a message to New Yorkers, promising a ‘safe’ World Cup and constant communication before games played in the city.

Quite surprisingly, the New York Mayor cited Balotelli to explain his view: “Mario Balotelli, one of the greatest strikers in recent memory, once said about his goal celebrations: ‘When I score, I don’t celebrate because I only do my job. When a postman delivers letters, does he celebrate?'” Mamdani said.

“When I score, I don’t celebrate because it’s my job. When a postman delivers letters, does he celebrate?

“When New York puts on a World Cup that is organised, safe, and runs smoothly and easily, will we celebrate? No, because we are only doing our job.”

Balotelli, 35, hasn’t formally retired from international football but made his last appearance for Italy in 2018, in a 1-1 Nations League draw against Poland.

The former Inter, Milan, Liverpool, and Manchester City striker made his Azzurri debut in 2010 under Cesare Prandelli and scored 14 goals in 36 matches with La Nazionale, reaching the Euro 2012 final.

Balotelli is currently under contract with United Arab Emirates side Al-Ittifaq.
