Lamine Yamal converted a late penalty at St James’ Park to ensure it is all to play for when Barcelona host Newcastle United in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash next week.
Harvey Barnes looked to have sealed a crucial win in a match heralded by Eddie Howe as the biggest in Newcastle’s recent history when his first-time finish put the Magpies ahead with 86 minutes played.
But Malick Thiaw brought down Dani Olmo inside stoppage time, allowing Lamine Yamal to slot home from the penalty spot and salvage a draw ahead of next week’s rematch at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Eddie Howe had urged Newcastle to draw upon Tino Asprilla’s heroics against the blaugrana in 1997, and while they didn’t manage to put three past their Catalan visitors, they had their fair share of chances.
Harvey Barnes looked bright on the flank throughout the early stages but Barcelona were able to grow into the game at a raucous St James’ Park, with Dan Burn nearly their unlikely hero as he turned a cross just wide of his own goal.
William Osula also proved to be a bright spark for Howe’s men, nodding a teasing Anthony Elanga cross over the crossbar before the would-be assister forced Joan Garcia into a fine save from range.
Aaron Ramsdale was also called upon after Kieran Trippier conceded possession, allowing Raphinha to tee up Fermin Lopez with ten first-half minutes left to play.
Osula came close once more before the break, but again couldn’t quite connect correctly with Elanga’s delivery from the wide area, and threatened again in the 56th minute after a threaded ball from Lewis Hall but blazed over the bar on that occasion.
But Barcelona were still in contention and could have opened the scoring just after the hour mark when Robert Lewandowski spurned a Raphinha cross wide of the target, prompting a flurry of substitutions from either side.
And it was one of those substitutes who created the hosts’ next chance. Jacob Murphy sent his volleyed effort over the crossbar, though, before Joelinton rippled the back of the net only to be flagged offside.
Newcastle grew to be the dominant force throughout the closing stages and finally found a merited breakthrough in the 86th minute when Barnes met Murphy’s cross to thump a volley past Garcia.
They couldn’t make that lead last, though, as Malick Thiaw sent substitute Dani Olmo tumbling to the ground inside the penalty box – and the resulting spot-kick was duly despatched by teen prodigy Lamine Yamal, who sent Ramsdale the wrong way.
A share of the spoils in Newcastle ensures it is all to play for in Barcelona next week, with a quarter-final berth up for grabs.
