Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool: Teenager ensured victory against 10-man Newcastle

Rio Ngumoha’s late goal guaranteed Liverpool a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United after Antony Gordon’s red card put the Magpies on the back foot.

At least that is what we thought, as Newcastle came back from a 2-0 deficit to equalise, but an injury-time winner snuffed out hopes of profiting against the champions.

Eddie Howe’s black and white army ensured St James’ Park lived up to its reputation on Monday night – but questions remain. With the transfer window closing next week, is time running out for what already looks like an immensely stretched squad?

As it happened

The clash against Liverpool produced nothing short of a galore of brilliant goals. In the 35th minute, Ryan Gravenberch picked up possession, cut between Fabian Schär and struck what looked like a speculative effort. It seemed to be drifting wide, but Nick Pope was wrong-footed and nestled into the bottom right corner to give Liverpool the lead.

Newcastle were dealt a tremendous blow at the end of the first half, with Anthony Gordon sent off after a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk. The winger played in an improvised striker role and was performing superbly, but his departure left Howe’s side short of an attacking replacement.

The second half started frantically. Just a minute after the restart, Hugo Ekitike – heavily linked with a move to the Magpies over the summer – struck again, giving Liverpool a comfortable two-goal cushion.

Just as all hope seemed lost, Bruno Guimarães stepped up. Rising highest, he planted a brilliant header beyond Alisson into the far corner, reigniting belief and sending St James’ into raptures. Arne Slot had called it one of the “most difficult away games you can face in a season” – the noise more than proved him right.

With the home crowd roaring, Newcastle, down to ten men, pushed on. Their efforts paid off in the 88th minute when substitute William Osula, who has faced criticism in recent weeks, single-handedly turned the game on its head, firing in a stunning strike to level the score.

The drama wasn’t over. Eleven minutes of added time brought wave after wave of pressure, but just when a point looked secured, Liverpool struck once more. In the 100th minute, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha latched onto a pass in the area and swept the ball past Pope to seal a 3–2 win for the Reds.

Despite the defeat, Howe’s side fought relentlessly, and the atmosphere lived up to every expectation. But with injuries mounting and reinforcements yet to arrive, Newcastle’s squad depth and absence of striking options remain the big talking point as the window ticks towards its close.
