Eddie Howe has confirmed Alexander Isak will miss Newcastle’s clash with Bromley this weekend but has eased fears over an injury.
Isak was substituted after scoring in Newcastle’s 2-0 win at Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-finals in midweek.
The Swedish striker was withdrawn on 65 minutes, though Howe has said Isak’s issue ‘doesn’t look like a serious injury’. That prognosis is a huge boost for Newcastle, with Isak having scored 10 goals in his last nine appearances for the Magpies.
“We think he’s pretty good. He is seeing his physio at the moment. I’ve given him a couple of days rest, but he is in a good place and will report back tomorrow [when] I will have a good look at him,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference.
“It doesn’t look like a serious injury – not from the initial assessments. But fingers crossed.
“We would’ve probably involved him in this game in some way, but with what has happened, he’d be given this game to rest and get himself right for the future schedule that we have.”
Isak is one of several Newcastle players who have been subject of speculation this month. Arsenal are among the clubs with admiration for the 25-year-old, though Howe is refusing to be drawn into transfer rumours regarding his squad.
“I said at the start on the talk of January that we didn’t want to focus on any outgoings.
“It’s not a month for me to destabilise anything. It’s to try and keep the harmony of the group. The feeling in the group is really strong at the moment, as you can imagine.
“For us, we are in a busy spell of fixtures. We are trying to win as many games as possible to continue that form and see where we end up.”
