Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says they are yet to find out the extent of Tino Livramento’s hamstring injury which forced the defender off against Bournemouth.

Livramento was forced off in the 59th minute in Newcastle’s penalty shootout victory over the Cherries, which saw them progress to the FA Cup Fourth Round.

The 23-year-old becomes the latest Magpies defender to become unavailable to Howe, with Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles and Kieran Trippier all out for the visit of Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg and beyond.

Howe confirmed his side will find out the extent to Livramento’s injury in the coming days.

“No major update,” Howe said. “He will be having a scan today to understand the extend of the damage on his hamstring.

“We will wait and see. We need to know the full extent of the injury and then we will have to make decisions based on other injuries and timescales and returns and of course, the transfer window plays into that.”

This will be the second time in three years that Newcastle and Manchester City have faced off in the Carabao Cup, with the Magpies knocking out Pep Guardiola’s side in the third round in the 2023/24 season.

Howe believes getting past the Citizens over two legs will be the toughest of tests for his side.

“The natural preference is for the home game to be the second leg just because you have a clear understanding of what you need to do and you have the home crowd behind you but it’s not like that this time,” he said.

“We need to use the home crowd to our advantage in the first game and try to do everything to try and impose ourselves on the tie. We really enjoyed the two-legged semi-final format last year. This is going to be a totally different challenge.

“Manchester City are the hardest team in the country to play over two legs. Pep [Guardiola] will have something ready for us tactically and we will have to be at our best to get through.”
