According to well-connected journalist Pete O’Rourke, the Magpies have opened negotiations with the Dutch defender over a new contract, an effort designed explicitly to fend off growing interest from Europe’s biggest clubs, including Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.
With Ibrahima Konaté’s future uncertain and his form inconsistent, Liverpool are expected to prioritise the signing of a centre-back in 2026, whether during the January window or in the summer.
Botman, the 6ft 4in defender, admired for his composure, aerial dominance and ability to build play from the back, has been repeatedly linked as one of Liverpool’s preferred solutions.
However, speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke outlined why Liverpool may now face an uphill battle:
“Newcastle are confident they can keep hold of Sven Botman. Contract talks have started with the intention of finding an agreement on a new deal. He has 18 months left, and right now the key for him is staying fit and enjoying his football.”
Botman endured injury setbacks last season but has returned strongly, re-establishing himself as a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s defence.
O’Rourke added that tying him down is seen as a top priority at St James’ Park:
“He’s a key man for Eddie Howe. The club wants to avoid another situation like the Alexander Isak saga last summer. Big clubs sniffing around is a concern, but Botman appears happy, and as long as Newcastle are competing at the highest level, he’s likely to stay.”

Newcastle are also working on securing other major contract renewals, including Sandro Tonali, as part of their efforts to stabilise the squad for the long term.
Their plan is to protect the club’s most valuable assets as they push to remain competitive domestically and in Europe.
For now, though, the Botman situation appears to be shifting in Newcastle’s favour.
Unless talks collapse or the defender signals a desire to leave, Liverpool may be forced to look elsewhere, or dig deep, if they want the commanding centre-back who has become one of the Premier League’s most reliable performers.
