Newcastle United believe Alexander Isak cannot stay at the club this summer without signing a new contract.

Isak has informed Newcastle of his desire to leave St James’ Park before Monday’s transfer deadline. The Swedish striker is currently training away from the first-team squad, having refused to join up with the Magpies for their pre-season campaign.

Eddie Howe has insisted he wants to see Isak in a Newcastle shirt again, but the player has said publicly he feels his relationship with the club is ‘broken’.

Liverpool have had a £110m offer rejected for Isak and are prepared to increase that bid to around £120m, if given encouragement that a deal can be done. The Reds are not prepared to go as high as the £150m fee that Newcastle have been reported as quoting.

Journalist Ben Jacobs is reporting that Newcastle ‘have felt for much of the summer that Isak staying without signing a new deal is untenable’. He has three years remaining on his current contract in the North East.

Newcastle are prepared to offer the 25-year-old a new deal if he is prepared to commit his future and reintegrate into the squad. The final decision on his future will be made by chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who is in Newcastle and seeking a resolution.

Newcastle want to sign at least one striker before Monday’s deadline for business and have had offers turned down for Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. However, each of those players are considering replacements for Callum Wilson, who was released this summer, and not Isak.
