Newcastle United returned to winning ways with an entertaining 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park, easing the pressure on Eddie Howe after a difficult run of results.

The Seagulls started brightly and nearly went ahead inside two minutes, but Nick Pope made a sharp save to deny Jack Hinshelwood. Carlos Baleba then rattled the crossbar with a curling effort as the visitors looked the sharper side early on.

However, Newcastle struck first in the 12th minute. Bart Verbruggen raced from his goal and clumsily challenged Jacob Murphy outside the area, allowing the winger to recover and cross for William Osula to nod into an empty net.

The Magpies doubled their lead midway through the first half when Dan Burn marked his 150th Premier League appearance by powering home a header from Bruno Guimaraes’ corner against his former club.

Brighton continued to threaten and Hinshelwood almost punished a mistake from Pope before the break, but Newcastle remained in control.

The visitors found a route back into the game in the second half. Danny Welbeck combined neatly with Hinshelwood, who showed composure inside the area before finishing beyond Pope to make it 2-1.

That set up a tense finale, with Pope producing an excellent late save to keep out Charalampos Kostoulas’ overhead kick. Former Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh then missed a huge chance to equalise from close range.

With Brighton pushing forward, Newcastle sealed the points in stoppage time. Yoane Wissa picked out Harvey Barnes, who smashed home from close range to spark wild celebrations on the touchline.

The result ended Newcastle’s five-match losing run and gave Howe a much-needed boost.
