Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The Magpies are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department this summer following Nick Pope’s struggles last season.
They have already signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims, but he is not ready to play regularly.
Newcastle have now made an enquiry about Suzuki’s availability, according to journalist Matteo Moretto.
“Newcastle have asked about Suzuki’s situation, but there are many others as well, including Leeds, “he said on YouTube.
“In any case, Suzuki will choose the best project, while Parma will choose the best offer from a financial point of view.”
Suzuki joined Parma in 2024 and impressed in his debut season, helping them avoid relegation. However, his form dipped last season,
Among goalkeepers in Europe’s top seven leagues, Suzuki ranked in the 55th percentile for save percentage, below Pope, who ranked in the 63rd percentile.
Pope also ranked higher for possession-adjusted interceptions (81st vs 66th), suggesting he is more proactive than Suzuki.
However, Suzuki outranked the England international for completed passes, highlighting his superiority with the ball at his feet.
Newcastle should focus on signing a goalkeeper who is significantly better than Pope, rather than pursuing Suzuki.
Manchester City’s James Trafford would be a good option for the Magpies. They have already been linked with him, but have yet to make a formal approach.
