With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the Magpies are on the lookout for midfield reinforcements to avoid leaving Eddie Howe short of options.

Having tracked Nmecha for some time now, Newcastle appear ready to exploit any opening in the market to bring the midfielder to St James’ Park.

Dortmund’s current contractual leverage on Nmecha remains strong, with the player having a substantial £73.5 million (€86 million) release clause which only becomes valid next summer. However, the Bundesliga side are open to doing a deal at a lower price this summer.

Nmecha’s technical security and elite passing ability make him an appealing asset for Premier League teams looking to strengthen their midfield.

He is highly familiar with English football from his formative years at Manchester City’s youth academy, and reports indicate the ‘outstanding’ midfielder is open to a return to England.

Manchester United have also been linked with Nmecha, but the Red Devils are focused on alternative targets to aid their own midfield rebuild.

Nmecha has enjoyed an impressive rise over the last year and is currently on international duty at the World Cup, where he scored the fastest goal for Germany in their World Cup opening match against Curacao. .

Whether Newcastle pursue a move for him could depend on the futures of Tonali and Guimaraes, who are of interest to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, respectively, at the moment.

Newcastle are open to selling Tonali as they continue negotiations with Spurs, but Guimaraes is currently viewed as untouchable.
