Eddie Howe says Fabian Schar is expected to miss around three months after undergoing surgery, while Jacob Murphy is set for a period on the sidelines with a hamstring issue.

Schar was stretchered off in the 4-3 win over Leeds last week, and there were initially fears that he had broken his ankle.

That is not the case, but he did suffer ligament damage and will be out for around three months.

The Newcastle boss said: “He had a successful surgery yesterday which is great news. Everything went according to plan.

“It’s difficult to give a definitive (timeframe) but I think around three months out will be the diagnosis we’ll work towards. If it’s any quicker then great, but we need to give Fabian time to recover.”

Howe also issued updates on Will Osula and Dan Burn: “They’re both getting closer. Will hopefully will be training imminently, we’ll then have to make a decision on when we can involve him in a matchday squad.

“Dan is improving, he’s running which is a really good thing. His fitness will be OK, it will just be managing the pain of his injury.”

Burn has been out since mid-December and has been a huge loss for the Magpies.

Despite the injury issues, Howe says January signings are not guaranteed: “It is very fluid at the moment. We are still in that watching or holding pattern and we will see what happens in the next few weeks. All options are available to us.”

On Jacob Murphy, who was taken off at half-time against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Howe said: “Jacob has had another scan and again, nothing is showing which is a strange one. You have to go on the symptoms and how the player feels.

“That’ll probably mean a period that Jacob has to come out. How long, I don’t know but we’re thankful it’s not a serious problem and hopefully one we can overcome quickly.”
