But Eddie Howe's men needed to come from behind to record their eighth successive victory in all competitions against a well-organised Bromley side, who had never reached this stage of the competition before in their history.
They enjoyed a dream start when Cameron Congreve opened the scoring after eight minutes. It was a fine goal from the Swansea City loanee, who showed good strength to make space for a shot before bending the ball past Martin Dúbravka from 22 yards.
Managed by former Newcastle goalkeeper coach Andy Woodman, the Ravens had lost just one of their previous 11 matches and looked full of confidence in the opening exchanges.
They could have doubled their advantage in the 14th minute when Danny Imray burst down the right wing and into the box but flashed his effort wide of the far post.
That let-off seemingly served as a wake-up call as United were back on level terms two minutes later. Miley threaded a ball through to Osula, who rounded goalkeeper Grant Smith before Bromley's defence scrambled clear. However, Harvey Barnes kept the attack alive on the left and played the ball to Matt Targett, who in turn found Miley. He unleashed a wonderful strike into the top corner - quite the way to mark his first start of the season.
Howe had made nine changes to his starting XI but still fielded five full internationals from the start. However, they struggled to create many clear openings in the first period, with Harvey Barnes shooting over from distance before the winger - following tenacious play from Miley - drilled in a low cross which Osula couldn't quite force home.
Gordon and Bruno Guimarães were introduced at the break, replacing Barnes and Joelinton, and those changes had the desired effect.
Two minutes after the restart, Targett was brought down by Ben Thompson in the box, allowing Gordon to send Smith the wrong way from the spot.
Then just after the hour mark, summer signing Osula cut inside from the right and let fly for a stunning first goal in black and white.
Targett was narrowly off target after that, as was Guimarães, but after a difficult beginning to the afternoon United were relatively comfortable in securing their place in the draw for the next round.
There was also a competitive debut for 17-year-old England youth international Trevan Sanusi in the second half - while former Wallsend Boys Club player and boyhood Newcastle fan Levi Amantchi came on for the visitors in the closing stages.
