The Magpies climbed into the top four with their latest three points against Wolverhampton Wanderers side while also completing a second league double of the campaign.

Under a full moon, it was an entertaining night at St. James' Park and and another noteworthy one for Isak, the newly-crowned Premier League Player of the Month for December who now has 17 goals this term and 11 in his last nine matches after scoring twice.

And Anthony Gordon, who added the third in the 74th minute, now has four in his last four - with Newcastle a team in form both individually and collectively.

Isak returned to the starting XI after missing the FA Cup win over Bromley three days previously as Eddie Howe made nine changes to that team - including a recall for Jacob Murphy, who created the first opening of the match in the sixth minute. The winger drifted in from the right but his low shot was pushed away by José Sá.

Wolves threatened through Gonçalo Guedes, who shot just wide after Hwang Hee-Chan's left-wing cross found its way to the Portugal international, but it was United who looked more likely to break the deadlock.

A brilliant low ball from Murphy was met by Isak, but Sá saved from point-blank range, before the goalkeeper parried another effort from Murphy after he again came inside from the right flank.

In the 25th minute, Emmanuel Agbandou made a superb block to deny Anthony Gordon, then Isak hit the woodwork when Bruno Guimarães found him peeling off the left touchline.

Isak made space for a shot which clipped the post - but six minutes later, he had his first of the evening as his sensational scoring streak continued.

Gordon stepped over the ball to give Isak space to burst down the left, from a similar position to the previous move, and he enjoyed a fortuitous bounce to advance towards the box before benefitting from more good fortune with a deflection off Rayan Aït-Nouri, but there was no doubt that it was his goal.

Wolves could and perhaps should have levelled in the 43rd minute as Rodrigo Gomes cut back for Jørgen Strand Larsen, whose placed shot hit a post.

But United ended the first half on top, with Joelinton firing over then, with the last kick before the break, Sandro Tonali seeing an effort from 12 yards deflected wide.

Matheus Cunha - back from suspension and on as a half-time substitute - forced a save from Martin Dúbravka at the beginning of the second period.

But - after Gordon had fired over when well-placed after strong work from Guimarães - Isak gave United some breathing space, expertly controlling a wonderful slide-rule Guimarães pass before finishing even more impressively.

Guimarães came close to a goal of his own before Wolves' best spell of the match saw Cunha shoot wide twice, either side of a comfortable Dúbravka save to thwart Nelson Semedo.

But Gordon secured the three points by slotting home from an Isak centre, although there was a long VAR check for a potential offside against the Swede.

Another VAR intervention chalked off what Wolves thought was a consolation goal - Santiago Bueno bundled home, but had handled the ball before doing so - and Dúbravka made a stunning save from close range to frustrate Strand Larsen, then two more routine ones from Pablo Sarabia.

They ensured another clean sheet for the Slovakian - on his 36th birthday - and another victory for the Magpies, who now occupy a Champions League qualification spot.
