Newcastle United have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Jorgen Strand Larsen, although it may not be enough to land the Wolves striker in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies have been frustrated in their search for new centre-forwards after missing out on a host of key targets. Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko and Joao Pedro were all in their sights, but instead chose to join Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.
They have also been chasing a deal for Yoane Wissa, but Brentford rejected a bid worth up to £40 million for the 28-year-old. The DR Congo international has not yet played for the Bees this season after informing the club of his desire to move to St James’ Park.
It appears that Strand Larsen has taken a leaf out of Wissa’s playbook by telling Wolves he “wants to leave”, according to The Athletic.
Wanderers, who have already rejected two bids from Newcastle, worth £50 million and £55 million, have not changed their stance and would reject a third bid if it were to come in.
It is claimed that Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has told Strand Larsen that a move “is not possible” this summer.
Following the sale of Matheus Cunha to Manchester United, Wolves are “looking for a striker”, but that is viewed as “supplementary” to the Norwegian rather than a replacement.
Strand Larsen’s exit would leave the Midlands outfit having to sign two strikers in the final few days of the transfer window.
Newcastle want to sign the 25-year-old as a replacement for Callum Wilson, not Alexander Isak, who is not training with the squad as he pushes for a move to Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Wolves have “started talks” to sign striker Tolu Arokodare from Belgian side Genk, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Nigerian was the top scorer in the Jupiler League last season.
