Newcastle United are interested in signing SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi this summer, according to the Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope.
Newcastle have scouts at the World Cup and would love to bring the Switzerland international to St James Park.
Manzambi has been one of the best players at the tournament in North America, with three goals and one assist in three appearances.
Newcastle could do with his creativity and verve in the middle of the park, but they will face competition.
Switzerland are preparing take on Algeria in the round of 32 of the World Cup, and Manzambi will be eager to impress.
The 20-year-old is primarily a central midfielder but has been deployed on the right wing at the tournament, and his finishing has caught Newcastle’s attention.
Manzambi scored seven goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Europa League last term.
Newcastle are desperate to challenge for a top-five finish in the Premier League next season after an underwhelming campaign last term.
They finished 12th in the league table and will need to recruit quality players this summer.
The Magpies could be in need of new midfielders in the coming weeks. Arsenal are looking to sign Bruno Guimaraes, while Sandro Tonali is a serious target for Tottenham Hotspur.
Manzambi could be a perfect replacement for either player, and Newcastle fans will hope he can replicate his World Cup heroics if he joins them.
