Newcastle United travel to Brussels for their second Champions League fixture on Wednesday, in desperate need of a result.
Heartbreaking late defeats against both Barcelona and Arsenal have left Eddie Howe’s side short on confidence. Furthermore, they are still without a point in their group.
The Magpies face a daunting task in Belgium. Their opponents are on a long unbeaten run. In fact, this will be Union SG’s first-ever Champions League home match in front of what is sure to be a fervent crowd. Consequently, Newcastle will need a professional and resilient performance to get their European campaign off the ground.
Several injuries are limiting Eddie Howe’s selection options for the trip to Brussels. He will be without Valentino Livramento, Jacob Ramsey, and Yoane Wissa, while Lewis Hall is also a doubt. There is some positive news in defence, however. Fabian Schär is expected to win his fitness battle to start alongside Sven Botman.
In midfield, Bruno Guimarães will drive the team forward. Indeed, he led all central midfielders in high-intensity pressures on matchday one. Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon provides the main threat in attack. He will be aiming to score in a second consecutive European game, a feat last achieved by a Newcastle player in 2004-05.
Newcastle United predicted XI: Pope; Trippier, Schär, Botman, Burn; Guimarães, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Gordon.
The Champions League fixture will be played at Lotto Park on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 5:45 pm BST.
The match will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+ in the UK. Coverage begins at 5:15 pm BST.
