Newcastle ‘yet to revive’ James Trafford chase as £50m valuation reported | OneFootball

The Chronicle reports Newcastle United have not yet revived interest in James Trafford, and that Manchester City want £50m for the goalkeeper.

Leeds are seeking a new goalkeeper after Karl Darlow left on a free to Manchester United. Trafford is understood to be among options if City sanction a move.

The 23-year-old joined City for £27m last summer on a five-year deal, expecting to be first choice, but fellow arrival Gianluigi Donnarumma overtook him and he started only four Premier League games. He is currently on holiday after being part of England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Aston Villa have also been linked, and Newcastle were long expected to return after last summer. The Magpies had agreed personal terms with the former Burnley keeper before City, who held a buyback on their academy graduate, stepped in.

Newcastle are poised to begin pre-season with Nick Pope as first choice and 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen, a £24m arrival earlier this summer, as competition. They opted against turning Aaron Ramsdale’s loan from Southampton into a permanent deal.

If Newcastle’s stance holds, one rival would fall away, though Leeds would still face competition. City hold the leverage given Trafford has four years left on his contract, and his wages are likely to be high. Leeds need at least one goalkeeper after Illan Meslier’s departure at the end of his deal.

Leeds have also been linked with Royal Union Saint-Gilloise’s Kjell Scherpen and Parma’s Zion Suzuki.
