West Ham have rejected Flamengo’s opening bid for Lucas Paquetá, and next week is seen as decisive for any agreement, according to Globo.com.
The transfer window in England closes on two February, a Monday, and West Ham have yet to move for a replacement. That stance reflects their desire to keep Paquetá until May, when the Premier League ends, which is not the player’s preference.
Flamengo have offered 40 million euros, split between a fixed sum and bonuses, and do not plan to reach the 45 million euros West Ham want. The Rio club also do not favour only receiving the player in mid-year.
For now, West Ham want Flamengo to raise the bid, or make the full 40 million euros guaranteed without add-ons.
Paquetá has pushed as far as he can to leave now. Nuno Espírito Santo is following the situation but has not used him recently. The midfielder has not played since the six January defeat to Nottingham Forest and will not be in Saturday’s squad to face Sunderland.
Flamengo need a deal next week to give West Ham time to source a replacement. If the English club hold firm on a May departure, talks could end without a positive outcome for Flamengo, who are not considering a mid-year arrival.
