Neymar has vowed to stop arguing with supporters and denied thinking he is bigger than Santos after a confrontation following the Copa Sudamericana match against Paraguayan side Recoleta at Vila Belmiro on Tuesday. The player said in a social media post that he will focus on football and give his all for the club.
The forward started, scored early in the first half, then was booked and came close to being sent off late on. Home fans had expected a win on the club’s anniversary, but Santos could not find another goal.
In a morning message he said results, good or bad, are part of football and that the team must keep working to improve. Later he stressed that no one is bigger than Santos, accepted he should not have argued with a fan, apologised to those offended and promised to cut out such exchanges.
He remains hopeful of making the World Cup and has nine more matches before the final list, due on 18 May from Carlo Ancelotti.
Neymar returned in mid February after knee arthroscopy in December and has four goals and three assists in eight games since. He set up a goal against Velo Clube, started in the quarter-final defeat by Novorizontino, scored twice against Vasco and once against Internacional, provided assists versus Corinthians and Remo, and also featured against Atlético-MG.
