Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord said it was nice for Arsenal to write their names in the history books after winning the first edition of the Champions Cup against Corinthians.
The Gunners beat the Brazilian side 3-2 after extra time, with Foord bagging the winner in the 104th minute.
Asked if it was the best moment of her career, the Australian said: “I mean, it’s definitely up there. I think to score a match winner is obviously a real nice moment, so yes, it’s one I’ll cherish for sure.
“I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet, but it’s nice to write our names in the history books, that’s for sure. it feels so good. I think this team that we have, it’s special and to be able to do this and write our names in the history books, it’s such a nice feeling and to lift another trophy for the club as well.”
Arsenal took the lead in the 15th minute before Corinthians quickly equalised, but Renee Slegers’ side thought they had won it with Lotte Wubben-Moy’s goal to make it 2-1.
The clock was ticking down in regulation time when Corinthians midfielder Victoria equalised from the penalty spot in the 96th minute.
At that point the stadium erupted with the Brazilian fans in raptures, and Gunners forward Chloe Kelly was very impressed by the Brazilian fans.
“Incredible, both sets of fans,” she said. “The Corinthians fans were incredible here at the Emirates. And, of course, the loudness coming from our fans behind the goal and all around the stadium is special. But seeing their fans bouncing, that was cool.”
The mood soon changed when Foord bagged just before half-time of extra time, and Kelly was pleased to be able to make more history with Arsenal and lift the trophy.
She said: “So good. Arsenal Football Club creating more history. Unbelievable. I’m happy to be part of it. Testing yourself against the best around the world. I think it’s really great to be part of this tournament and to put our stamp on it.”
