Nico Schlotterbeck and Borussia Dortmund – actually a project with long-term leadership aspirations. BVB would like to make the 26-year-old the face of the club: he is to become an advertising icon, head of the dressing room, boss of the defence and, in future, captain. But the crucial question remains: does Schlotterbeck even want to take on this role?
In recent weeks, there have been increasing signs that the DFB defender does not necessarily see his future in Dortmund. Doubts about a contract extension have grown louder and louder. According to Sky, Schlotterbeck is flirting with a move to a top European club – and two names are particularly in focus: Real Madrid and FC Bayern. According to the pay-TV channel, the defender is „gambling“ on a transfer in the summer of 2026.
The fact that Schlotterbeck can imagine a move to Munich of all places lends the issue enormous explosiveness. A transfer from BVB to the record champions is an exceptional case in both sporting and emotional terms, which would generate a corresponding amount of attention.
As things stand at the moment, FC Bayern’s internal goal is clearly to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, which expires in the summer. The Munich club are fully committed to the Frenchman, whose role has been further strengthened under Vincent Kompany. The contract talks are a top priority and are said to have recently taken a positive course.
Only if Upamecano, contrary to expectations, does not sign a new contract or even leaves on a free transfer would the situation change fundamentally. In this scenario, the record champions would have to react – and it is precisely then that candidates such as Schlotterbeck come to the fore.
At the same time, Minjae Kim is also on the sales list should there be major upheaval. A combination of Upamecano leaving and Kim being sold would leave room for a top-class new arrival. According to Sky , Schlotterbeck would become one of the absolute top targets in this case.
