A tense aftermath in Famalicão ended with Nicolás Otamendi receiving a stern dressing down over his red card. According to A Bola, Benfica president Rui Costa and José Mourinho confronted the captain.
The centre-back was sent off early in the second half when Benfica were 2-0 ahead, and his dismissal had a direct impact on the result.
Rui Costa, serving a 25-day suspension, told Otamendi he was far from satisfied. He stressed the foul that led to the red card could have been avoided and did not meet a captain’s responsibilities.
Mourinho, 63, agreed that the number 30 influenced the outcome in Famalicão. Otamendi accepted the criticism and took responsibility.
Despite the episode, an extension for the Argentine remains possible. This season he has played 48 matches for Benfica, 29 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça, totalling 4,224 minutes and three goals. He is valued at one million euros.
