Kylian Mbappé’s contract with Nike expires on 31 July and the brand is pushing to extend it, though talks remain unresolved, according to L'Équipe.
The deal runs out 12 days after the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, with the tournament in the United States from 11 June to 19 July. Discussions have intensified in recent weeks, but there is no guarantee of a renewal as the France captain continues to weigh his options.
Nike is prepared to invest heavily to keep Mbappé, having just renewed its partnership with the French Football Federation until 2034 on a record €100m per year. That agreement more than doubled the previous deal.
After Mbappé left PSG, which is linked to Nike, for Real Madrid, which is not, France remained the company’s only route to sell his named shirts. Communications would also be complicated if the national team, likely to be led by Zinédine Zidane, aligns with an Adidas coach while Ousmane Dembélé, the 2025 Ballon d’Or, is also with Adidas.
Mbappé is one of the few athletes to have a Nike sub-brand, KM, with several million items sold annually, placing him alongside Michael Jordan, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Tiger Woods. Nike plans to spotlight him during France’s US tour, including a Vanity Fair cover interview arranged in collaboration with the company, though that may still not secure his signature.
Rival manufacturers are offering lucrative terms, including some not yet embedded in football. Mbappé, with Nike since age eight and now 27, is emotionally attached but may prefer a shorter commitment and is in no rush. It would not be impossible that, for France’s first match after the World Cup, he wears whichever boots he prefers.
