A 0-1 home loss to FC Augsburg – one of many Bundesliga “shocks around the shop” on Saturday afternoon – left Borussia Dortmund navel-gazing. BVB head coach Niko Kovac maintained a dour expression at his post match press conference. Kovac found himself with absolutely nothing positive to report.
“I can describe it clearly and concisely,” Kovac began. “We played very badly today. We didn’t deliver what we wanted and planned for. No chances. No danger in front of goal. No aggressiveness. No intensity. No speed with our ball circulation. “And I’ll emphasize that we got what we deserved,” Kovac continued, “Namely, nothing.”
Looking ahead to the second leg of the Champions League draw against OSC Lille, Kovac did wish to stress that the team could rebound from both the league loss and last Tuesday’s disappointing showing. Kovac isisted that the last two results needn’t influence the next fixture.
“A lot can happen between now and Wednesday,” Kovac noted. “We don’t have to paint it all black. We managed to keep things organized in the last two Bundesliga games and in the first half against Lille.“
“In the lives of footballers and coaches, it’s one’s job to find positives,” Kovac concluded. “The positive here is that we have four days to completely regroup and reset in order to deliver a much better performance. We can and must.“
