According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland's World Cup cohort enjoyed a standout night as Nilson Angulo scored in Ecuador's 2-1 win over Germany to seal an unexpected place in the knockouts.
Angulo struck from range and was named player of the match. England are among Ecuador's possible opponents next. The 23-year-old's form is a major boost for Sunderland, who hope he can make a big impact next season after his January move from Anderlecht and recovery from injury.
Brian Brobbey continued his fine run for the Netherlands, scoring again and taking man of the match in a 3-1 win over Tunisia. Netherlands won group F and will face Morocco in the round of 32 next week.
Omar Alderete's Paraguay drew 0-0 with Australia to qualify for the final 32 as a best third-place side. Alderete was again crucial, although he sustained an injury scare late on and will be assessed to determine the severity.
Simon Adingra was an unused substitute as Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0 to progress. Sunderland now have four different scorers at the World Cup, bettered only by Ligue 1 champions PSG, and their six goals trail only Real Madrid's nine.
Only Wilson Isidor is heading home after the group stage. While that will likely see several players miss the start of pre-season, FIFA pays the club around $5,000 per player per day while they remain at the tournament.
Habib Diarra's Senegal must beat Iraq on Friday night to keep alive hopes of advancing as a best third-place team. Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku also need a positive result against Uzbekistan on Sunday morning if DR Congo are to progress.
