Oaktree Capital will not make the same mistakes as Massimo Moratti following the 2010 after Inter Milan’s Champions League final humbling.

This is the view in Italian outlet Gazzetta.it. They argue that the 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain was the ultimate wake-up call to the Inter owners to invest and refresh the team.

Inter Milan’s 2009-10 season was undoubtedly the greatest in their modern era. However, the one that followed it was something of a hangover campaign.

Then-Inter President Massimo Moratti decided to keep the team largely as it was. There was little need to intervene, he reasoned, with a team that had been so successful.

However, the aging Nerazzurri team dropped off. There was perhaps some complacency and lack of motivation after the highs of the 2009-10 season.

There were no big new signings who would really change the feel of the team or come in with the hunger to prove that they belonged at that level.

It would be fair to say there will be no such resting on laurels at Inter Milan next season.

the Nerazzurri faced a crushing 5-0 defeat on the biggest stage against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

After that loss, the Inter squad will know that they must prove themselves all over again.

Moreover, the Nerazzurri owners will be aware that the squad simply isn’t cut out to compete at that level over an entire season.

Therefore, Oaktree will be very keen to make changes. There is no risk in them believing that there is no need for a refresh after a 5-0 defeat in the Champions League final.

Accordingly, the Inter Milan owners will invest. And they will do it with purpose.

After last summer’s transfer window largely being focused on keeping the Inter squad together, this will be the first summer that Oaktree really leave their stamp.
