The defender has been named as a potential transfer target for several leading clubs, following interest in his services during the summer window.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United were all credited with interest in signing Romero during the summer, though Spurs rejected all approaches for Romero who is considered ‘untouchable’ in North London.

No release clause in Romero contract

Reports from his native Argentina have claimed there is a €65m (£54.3m) release clause in the player’s contract that can be activated, though Fabrizio Romano has revealed those reports are false.

Spurs have no intention of selling the 26-year-old, who has emerged as a key figure for club and country. Romero was named as vice-captain at Spurs last season and has been an important part of Argentina’s success under Lionel Scaloni.

The centre-back was named in the Team of the Tournament as Argentina won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024 and also formed part of the team that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He has lost just twice in 38 appearances for La Albiceleste at international level.
