Jan-Christian Dreesen has spoken out clearly about Jürgen Klopp’s appointment as head coach of the German national team. The CEO of FC Bayern is convinced that the success of the German national team will depend largely on the Munich pros. At the same time, he publicly expressed his support for Klopp.

With Jürgen Klopp, a new era is beginning at the DFB. Following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure, the former successful coach of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC is tasked with leading the national team back to the top of the world.

For Jan-Christian Dreesen, there is no question that Klopp is the right choice for this position. Speaking at the PresseClub München, the FC Bayern CEO had nothing but praise for the new national team coach—though he coupled this with a clear statement about the importance of the Bayern players.

Dreesen: Bayern players are the key

“I’ve come to know Jürgen Klopp as someone who wants to win,” Dreesen explained. The Bayern boss then added: “He’ll only be able to do that with the players from FC Bayern. That’s not arrogance—it’s a fact.”

With this statement, the 58-year-old underscored the record champion’s importance to the German national team. After all, FC Bayern traditionally provides a large portion of the DFB squad and currently has numerous national team players on its roster.

Recently, there had been discussion about whether the DFB’s new coaching staff could cause unrest due to its close ties to Borussia Dortmund.

In addition to Klopp, Peter Krawietz, Sven Bender, and Pepijn Lijnders are part of the coaching staff. While Krawietz and Bender have already worked with Klopp in Dortmund, the Dutchman Lijnders knows the national team coach from their time together at Liverpool FC.

For Dreesen, however, this background is irrelevant.

“So no one can say that he isn’t the right person for the job,” emphasized the Bayern CEO, describing Klopp as a “people person.” His personality in particular could help the national team: “He has a very strong sense of self-confidence, which will hopefully rub off on the team.”

The DFB should think big again

Dreesen also spoke out against setting goals that are too low for the upcoming tournaments.

In his view, the German Football Association’s aspirations must be significantly higher than simply reaching another knockout round. “It also makes no sense to set a goal now of reaching the quarterfinals next time. Hey, what kind of goal is that? It can’t be right that a country with the world’s largest sports federation has the goal of going further next time than it did last time. Yeah, that would at least be the round of 16,” said the Bayern boss.

With his remarks, Dreesen makes it clear that he has great confidence in Jürgen Klopp. At the same time, he sees the FC Bayern players as a decisive factor for the national team’s future success. From the perspective of the Munich CEO, the DFB squad can only achieve its ambitious goals if the record champion’s key players continue to play a leading role under Klopp.
